Weaving Hope Into Hard Circumstances
Tumaini is a social enterprise located in Maai Mahiu, Kenya whose mission is to empower women who are rising above hard circumstances to earn an income and thrive in their communities. TUMAINI means HOPE in Swahili. Their handwoven products tell stories of redemption and help give HOPE to the women who make them.
Maai Mahiu is located along the Trans-African highway also known as the "HIV Highway" traveling through the "AIDS Belt" of Africa. The truckstop environment cultivates a hotbed for drugs and prostitution that devastates the lives of the most vulnerable: the women and children. The poverty and hopelessness found in the town are a sharp contrast to the beauty of the thriving Rift Valley landscape that surrounds it.
The family of Tumaini weavers are survivors. Most are single mothers with no support. They all have unique gifts and a desire to learn and work. Each artisan is known and loved at Tumaini. You will feel the connection. With every Tumaini purchase, a card is attached with the name and picture of the woman who created it. Championing these artisans is the heartbeat of Tumaini and Sparrow & Co is proud to support their efforts.
